Cult of Pedagogy- What's Possible with Green Screens in the Classroom

What's Possible with Green Screens in the Classroom

For this week's blog review, I searched the Cult of Pedagogy's technology section of their blog.  I came across an entry on October 25, 2020, about using green screens in the classroom.  This caught my eye because I am interested in learning more about integrating the use of green screens for some of my STEAM projects.  I would love to have the kids act as reporters to share their understanding of the material while also practicing ELA skills.
In the blog entry, Jennifer Gonzalez shares an interview with a teacher explaining how they were incorporating green screens in the classroom.  She also provides tips on what software to try using with students, the materials needed for various budgets, and ideas on engaging the students with their projects.  I liked how she shared ways to use green screens with multiple budgets and space limitations.  There are times when I want to try new things, but I'm afraid of spending money on something that will not go the way I had hoped and never use it again.  After reading through this entry, my next steps will be researching and playing with the different editing software.  Hopefully, I will do one green screen project with the kids before the year is over.

  1. I did a project a few years ago when I was teaching science where we had students create a news report about our weather unit. Students picked different weather topics and then worked together to take on different roles and create a news broadcast using a greenscreen we had at the school. It was a really cool project, and our librarian was a great resource to help the students learn more about how to work with the editing software.

  2. This sounds interesting! Our school is planning to have STEAM part-time next year for a special area class. The person who will be doing the STEAM class loves incorporating different and/or new technologies already, so I will have to mention this to her. I think some of our students would love getting to do projects with the greenscreen. It could open a lot of possibilities for creativity! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Oh my gosh I love the idea of doing news reports, I've also had kids play the role of detective which they've seemed to love and it helps them really dive into the material more!
