Using Google Sites for Student Portfolios

Using Google Sites for Student Portfolios

This week, my team began working on our students' digital portfolios for their end-of-the-year defense panels. The 5th-graders, 8th-graders, and our seniors participate in a defense panel at the end of the school year. They present their hard work and explain why they should graduate to the next chapter of their academic career. To support our students, we are having the students create a portfolio using Google Sites. Using this platform, students will create a website housing the artifacts they feel represent their proficiency in the standards and concepts. Since Google Sites is part of the Google Suite, students will be able to easily embed documents from their Google Drive. They will also be able to upload files directly from their computers.
Like many of the other applications in Google Suite, Google Sites have templates ready for the user to use. One of the premade templates is a student portfolio. My team started with this template and then tweaked it for our needs. After building a master copy, we shared it with the students and then had each student make their own copy. Each student then shared their site with my team and other teachers that the students work with. We will be able to enter the sites as an editor to help them when needed.
Since we are just starting the portfolios, I do not have any student examples but below are some screenshots of our master copy.

  1. I love the idea of using Google Sites to allow students to make their end of the year presentation. I am moving to 5th grade next year and I think this would be an awesome and user friendly tool for my students!

  3. My son created his end of 8th grade year portfolio with the google site and it was very easy for him to navigate. He spent hours working on it because he really enjoyed the creative process. What a great way for students to share what they know and learned!!!
