Real Actions School Leaders Can Take to Support Teachers

 Real Actions School Leaders Can Take to Support Teachers

    For my blog reading, this week I found an article on Edutopia by PJ Caposey discussing ways administration can support teachers during this continuously crazy time in education.  I was drawn to this post because I find myself frustrated with myself, students, job, etc. right now.  Maybe because its March, the longest month for teaching, or maybe because its almost spring break and everyone is ready for a vacation.  Regardless of the reason, it's hard to be a teacher right now.
   In the post, Caposey shared the following tips for administration;
  1. Quit talking about self-care and give teachers time to actually allow for self-care.
  2. "Place the same focus on helping solve the behavioral problems as [being] placed on learning loss."
  3. Stop asking teachers to sub for coworkers during their planning time.  And do not create reasons for "pitting teachers against each other."
  4. Meet the teachers where they are, not where social media says they are.
  5. Be real, authentic, and lead.
  6. Remind people of expectations and norms.  "Society may be changing, but it doesn't mean we need to change the norms around how we interact with our colleagues."

    Frustrations are high right now at our school.  The rumors have begone on who is leaving at the end of the year, state testing is right around the corner, the students are catching "spring fever,"  and everyone is tired and traumatized from the last two years.  I'm hoping that things will be more normal next year, but until then, I just have to keep trudging forward.

  1. Wow, I can relate to this so much. This sounds like a very interesting read. I was just talking recently how we are told to practice self-care and then given a handful of additional expectations that are going to take additional time that we don't have throughout our workday. I am also hoping that next year is more normal., as this year already has been extremely rough.
