Blog Review- Edutopia: Teaching Students to Evaluate Websites

Edutopia: Teaching Students to Evaluate Websites

This week I decided to explore a different website/blog, Edutopia.   I searched the "integrating technology section and found a post by Amie Weinburg from 1/21/2022 discussing how to teach middle and high school students how to evaluate websites.  She discusses the importance of separating appearance from content, checking the site's sources, and identifying the site's purpose to eliminate biases.  Weinburg provides different strategies for each topic.

While I teach 5th graders, I felt that this was relevant to the current lessons in class.  My students are conducting ELA research and science research to write an argumentative piece and an informational essay.  The students are required to include citations in their papers.  We have been discussing how it is essential to give credit to other authors, and my next step is teaching how to pick credible sources that are experts.

The strategies she provided could easily be adapted for younger students.  I see myself sharing her strategies with the kids by making an anchor chart together and doing some whole-class modeling.  I have noticed my students struggling with determining sources while researching; I hope Weinburg's strategies will help.
