Blog Reflection- Cult of Pedagogy: 8 Ways to Grow Students' Vocabulary
As I continued exploring the blog achieve I came across this post from December 13, 2021, by Angela Peery discussing the ways to include vocabulary into various lessons. I found this post interesting because vocabulary integration is important to me. I purposely integrate content vocabulary in different subjects and during regular conversations with my students. But, I always try to find ways for students to practice and build their vocabulary. In this post, Peery provides different strategies for teachers, some are direct instruction, some are modeling (like I do already), and then some technical resources. The technical resources are what I would like to share with you because we are all currently learning ways to support our students using technology.
In the post, Peery shares three websites to have your students try, Freerice.org, Flocabulary.com/, Vocabadorapp.com. All three sources provide engaging activities for students to practice/play that will increase their vocabulary. This week I tried Freerice.org with my students and they really enjoyed the website for the charitable contribution the site makes to those in need. When players get correct answers, the website founders, the United Nations World Food Program, donates rice to those in need. My students were excited to see how much they could contribute. This site has now made the list of educational activities the kids can pick from during their free choice learning time. I'm hoping that they continue to find this site engaging because they are being exposed to numerous words that they do not know!
